Tennis Sweeps Norfolk State

Radford, Va. --Radford’s tennis teams defeated Norfolk State this afternoon from Dedmon Center Courts. The men (7-6) blanked the Spartans, 7-0, while the women (3-10) won 4-3.

In doubles, seniors Joakim Arhammar (Sollentuna, Sweden) and Robel Mengisteab (Kista, Sweden) won at No. 2 and Radford was awarded No. 3 by default. The Highlanders swept through singles as juniors Brandon Johnson (Roanoke, Va.), junior Arthur Vasarevic (Zagreb, Croatia), Mengisteab and senior Dominic Soeur won in straight sets. Arhammar was up 6-1, 4-1 before opponent retired. The No. 6 singles was awarded to RU by default.

On the women’s side, RU took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 by junior Caroline Downs (Radford, Va.) and freshman Camila Nolden (Florianopolis, Brazil) and at No. 3 by sophomore Jessica Nixon (Leesburg, Va.) and Cassandra Price (Deland, Fla.). The Highlanders earned the win as Price at No. 5, Nixon at No. 6 and freshman Ashton Downs (Radford, Va.) at No. 4 won in straight sets.

Radford’s men’s team will host Appalachian State on April 1 at 2 pm, while the women head to Longwood on Tuesday, March 29 for a 3 pm match.
